Conferences and Professional Memberships
ASSOCIATION FOR CONSUMER RESEARCH (ACR)
The Association for Consumer Research is an organization whose mission is to “advance consumer
research and facilitate the exchange of scholarly information among members of academia,
industry, and government worldwide.” Membership is $95 ($40 for doctoral students). For social
marketers like me, consider participating in TRANSFORMATIVE CONSUMER RESEARCH. TCR is a
movement within ACR that “that seeks to encourage, support, and publicize research that benefits
consumer welfare and quality of life for all beings affected by consumption across the world.” ACR’s
annual conference usually takes place in the Fall.

AMERICAN MARKETING ASSOCIATION (AMA)
With roots leading to 1915, the AMA has become an association for people and organizations all
around the world involved in “the practice, teaching, and study of marketing.” Together, the AMA has
defined marketing’s value for consumers, companies, and society at large. AMA hosts multiple
conferences each year and the three many researchers attend are known as Winter AMA (usually
around mid-February), Marketing & Public Policy Conference (early summer), and Summer AMA
(early to mid-August).

AMERICAN COUNCIL ON CONSUMER INTERESTS (ACCI)
Since 1953, the American Council on Consumer Interests, ACCI, has been a leading membership
organization for academicians and other professionals involved in consumer and family economics.
The mission of ACCI is to enhance consumer and family economic well-being. The ACCI is the leading
consumer policy research and education organization consisting of a world-wide community of
researchers, educators and related professionals dedicated to enhancing consumer well-being. ACCI
promotes the consumer interest by encouraging, producing and communicating policy-relevant
research.

ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE (AMS)
The Academy, which began at Long Island University in 1971, is “dedicated to promoting high
standards and excellence in the creation and dissemination of marketing knowledge and the
furtherance of marketing practice through a role of leadership within the discipline of marketing
around the world.” They have an annual conference in the US that takes place around May. AMS also
has a fantastic ‘World Marketing Congress’ conference that occurs in the summer.

The Association of Internet Researchers is among the premier international associations for
students and scholars in the field of internet studies. We are an inclusive community and encourage
membership by researchers ranging from cultural studies through social sciences to informatics,
and beyond. Founded in 1998, AoIR organises academic conferences which annually bring together
the best and brightest researchers and practitioners in Internet research.

SOCIETY FOR CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGY (SCP)
The Society for Consumer Psychology is for those in behavioral science who are interested in the
discipline of consumer psychology. It’s vision is to “facilitate the generation and dissemination of
intellectual contributions and promote professional development and research opportunities.” SCP’s
primary annual conference takes place in Winter (around February).

SOCIETY FOR MARKETING ADVANCES (SMA)
The SMA was established to “foster service, research, and education in all phases of marketing,” in
addition to providing a forum for sharing ideas among members. They include teachers, students,
researchers, business men and women, and members of the government. This is one of my favorite
conferences since it’s extremely friendly and productive. The annual conference is usually in the fall
and there are always great pre-conference events. I strongly encourage doctoral students to
consider attending SMA.
